Printers trays, also known as type cases or job cases, were used in letterpress printing from the 19th century to the 1960s:
Purpose: Held metal letters and characters from a specific font or typeface
Construction: Made from solid wood with finger or dovetail joints, and often had ornate handles
Design: Divided into sections for different letters, with capital letters usually stored in a separate drawer
Production: Made by specialist foundries and manufacturers, and finished by hand
Popularity: The California Job Case was the most popular design in the United States
The world's first movable type printing technology was invented in China around 1040 AD by Bi Sheng. The movable type was held in a job case, which was a drawer with many small compartments for the different letters.
