The history of fire buckets and pumps includes:

Fire buckets

Before organized fire brigades, people used buckets to fight fires. Buckets were made of leather and had rope handles. They were passed along a line of people to the fire. Buckets with rounded bottoms were more effective at launching water than flat-bottomed buckets.

Fire pumps

The first fire pump was developed in the third century BC by Ctesibius, a Greek citizen of Alexandria. Hero of Alexandria improved on the design in the first century BC.

Richard Newsham

In 1720, Richard Newsham built a manual pump that could pump 400 liters per minute. His pump was designed with a "gimble," a chain mechanism that kept the pistons vertical while pumping. Newsham's pump was the basis for many years of pump design.

Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department

In 1803, Wethersfield, Connecticut established its volunteer fire department, which included two "force pumps". These were small wheeled water pumps that could be moved to a fire by men or horses.

Fire buckets are still used today, especially for fighting small fires. They are cheap, reliable, and easy to use.
