The Austin 1300 was a popular family saloon car produced from 1963 to 1974. It was also known as the BMC ADO16. The 1300 GT was introduced in 1969 as a sportier version of the car.

History

The 1300 was a front-wheel drive car with a large interior and Hydrolastic fluid suspension

The 1300 GT had a 1275 cc twin-carburetor engine, black vinyl roof, and black grille

The 1300 GT was designed to appeal to younger buyers and was cheaper than the MG 1300

The 1300 GT was available with bold colors like orange and yellow

The 1300 GT was intended to compete with the Ford Escort GT and Vauxhall counterpart

Issues

The 1300 was prone to rusting, especially in damp climates

The 1300 was underpowered and had trouble keeping up with fast freeway speeds in the U.S.

The automatic transmission was prone to failure

Legacy

The 1300 was a popular car that was easy to drive and maintain. It was also a good choice for learning to drive.

 

The Austin Motor Company was a British car manufacturer founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin. The company was based in Longbridge, Birmingham.

Early history

Austin started out in the motor industry at Wolseley cars, where he became general manager.

In 1905, Austin bought a disused printing works and founded the Austin Motor Company.

The first car produced was a four-cylinder model.

In 1909, Austin produced a mini car, the 7HP model.

In 1914, Austin became a publicly listed company.

Mergers and acquisitions

In 1952, Austin merged with Morris Motors Limited to form British Motor Corporation (BMC).

In 1970, Austin became part of British Leyland.

In the 1980s, Austin launched the Metro, which became one of the most popular British cars of the decade.

The Austin name was phased out by Rover Group in 1987.

Ownership

The Austin trademark is currently owned by the Chinese firm SAIC Motor.

In 2015, John Stubbs in Essex purchased the 'Austin Motor Company' patent.

Other Austin products

Austin also produced commercial vehicles, tractors, and the Whippet light aeroplane.
