The first commercial first aid kit was created in 1888 by Robert Wood Johnson, co-founder of Johnson & Johnson. The kit was designed for railway workers who often lacked access to medical supplies.

How it started

Johnson was traveling by train in Colorado when he met the chief surgeon for the Denver & Rio Grande Railway.

The surgeon told Johnson about the dangers of railroad construction and the lack of medical care.

Johnson collaborated with medical professionals to create a kit with bandages, antiseptics, and treatment instructions.

How it evolved

The concept spread to other industries, including the home and military.

During World War I, soldiers carried compact kits for treating battlefield injuries.

Johnson & Johnson created customized kits for new types of transportation and activities, such as automobiles, airplanes, boating, and hiking.

First aid symbols

The cross is a widely recognized symbol of first aid and medicine. The ISO endorses the use of a green background and white cross, which is the standard in many countries and regions.
