Wooden brick molds have been used for centuries to make bricks by hand:
History
The earliest mention of brickmaking is in the Bible, and bricks dating back 10,000 years have been found in the Middle East. In Medieval times, workers would knead clay, place it in a wooden mold, and then remove the brick-shaped clay from the mold.
Shape
Wooden brick molds were rectangular and four-sided, with no base or lid. They were placed on the ground or on a brickmaker's table.
Production
Bricks made on the ground are usually from before the 19th century and are known as "place" bricks. In the 19th century, a smaller rectangular block of wood was screwed onto the table to create the brick's "frog".
Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution increased production capacity, which decreased the cost of construction and manufacturing. By the 1920s, brick-making machines could produce up to 12,000 bricks per day.
Reuse
Vintage wooden brick molds can be repurposed as storage or display boxes, or as shelving.
