The history of Schweppes begins with the discovery of carbonated water by Jacob Schweppe in 1783. Schweppe was a Swiss-born jeweler and amateur scientist. He used the discoveries of English chemist Joseph Priestley to develop his process for making carbonated mineral water.
Early history
1783: Schweppe founded the Schweppes Company in Geneva.
1792: Schweppe moved the business to London and opened his first factory on Drury Lane.
1870: Ginger ale was introduced to the Schweppes product line.
1871: Tonic water, the first carbonated tonic, was introduced to the Schweppes product line.
1957: Bitter lemon was introduced to the Schweppes product line.
Later history
1969: Schweppes merged with Cadbury to become Cadbury Schweppes.
2008: Cadbury Schweppes was split, with the US beverage unit becoming Keurig Dr Pepper.
Today: The Schweppes brand is owned by the Coca-Cola Company in some territories, and by Schweppes International Limited in others.
Schweppes products include ginger ale, bitter lemon, soda water, and tonic water.
