Pine blanket boxes have a long history, dating back to the 17th century in Europe and Colonial America:

Origin

Blanket boxes originated in Europe, particularly in France and the UK, as a practical way to store important items and linens. They were often made in the Jacobean style, with bracketed legs and a flat top lid.

Early uses

Blanket boxes were used for storing clothing, documents, and other valuables, and as a place to sit. They were also a more affordable and sturdy alternative to chairs and closets, which were less common at the time.

Arrival in America

Early European settlers brought blanket boxes to Colonial America, where they became a staple of the home. In America, they were often called Hope Chests or Dowry Chests, and were used by unmarried girls to store items they would use once married.

Evolution

Over time, drawers were added to the basic blanket box design, creating a new piece of furniture called the mule chest. The drawers in the mule chest were used to store slippers, which colonists called "mules".

Materials

Blanket chests were commonly made from pine, but could also be made from walnut or mahogany.

Other styles

Pine furniture was also popular in other parts of the world, including the Netherlands, England, and Mexico.
