Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with needle and thread, and its history can be traced back thousands of years:

Prehistoric

Evidence of embroidery dates back to 38,000 BCE, when people used stone beads and needles with eyes. The earliest surviving embroidered materials are from Egypt, and include hem panels from the tunic of Tutankhamun.

Ancient

Embroidery was practiced in many ancient civilizations, including China, India, and Persia:

China: The earliest Chinese embroideries date back to the T'ang dynasty (618–907 CE), and the most famous examples are from the Ch'ing dynasty (1644–1911/12).

India: Many examples of Indian embroidery survive from the Mughal period (1556), and many were brought to Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Persia: Examples of Persian embroidery from the 16th and 17th centuries feature geometric patterns.

Medieval

In the UK, embroidery began in the Anglo-Saxon period, with nuns and monks creating religious vestments and altar cloths.

Early modern

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Dutch East Indies produced silk embroideries, and a patchwork called Resht was produced in Persia.

19th century

In England, Berlin wool work became popular, featuring intricate three-dimensional designs.
