Shagreen is a type of rawhide that has a rough, granular surface and is often dyed green. It can be made from the untanned skin of a horse, onager, shark, or ray.

Shagreen has been used for many purposes throughout history, including:

Samurai swords: Shagreen was used to cushion the handles of Japanese samurai swords, providing grip and a sense of opulence.

Decorative items: Shagreen was used for boxes, knife skins, and shaving kits.

Furniture: Shagreen was used as a decorative inlay on cabinetry and desks during the Art Deco period.

Grating wasabi root: Shagreen was used to grate wasabi root into a paste.

Microscopes: Shagreen was used in microscopes.

Man-made replicas of shagreen are now widely used.

Hip flasks were originally called pilgrim bottles and were associated with religious pilgrimages. They were often made from glass or leather and had rings at the base of the neck so they could be worn around the body or hung from a saddle.

Hip flasks are still popular today as gifts for people celebrating birthdays, weddings, or graduations
