The Chad Valley toy company was founded in Birmingham in the early 19th century as a printing business. The company's name comes from the Chad Brook valley where it moved to the suburb of Harborne. During World War II, the company stopped making toys to produce goods for the war effort, including wooden instrument cases and hospital beds. After the war, the company bought other toy firms, but ran into financial trouble in the 1970s.

The spinning wheel originated in Zhou dynasty China in the first millennium BCE.
The spinning wheel was invented in the Middle-East by the early 11th century.
The spinning wheel was used in India by the 12th century.
Spinning wheel technology
The Saxon wheel, introduced in Europe in the 16th century, had a bobbin for winding yarn and a stationary vertical rod for holding the raw fiber. The operator used a foot treadle to actuate the wheel.
