The Chad Valley toy company was founded in Birmingham in the early 19th century as a printing business. The company's name comes from the Chad Brook valley where it moved to the suburb of Harborne. During World War II, the company stopped making toys to produce goods for the war effort, including wooden instrument cases and hospital beds. After the war, the company bought other toy firms, but ran into financial trouble in the 1970s.
