Ice cream history

The origins of ice cream are difficult to pinpoint, but it may have originated in ancient China. According to legend, Marco Polo brought ice cream to Italy, Catherine de Medici brought it to France, and Thomas Jefferson brought it to America.

Ice cream in England

The first recorded serving of ice cream in England was in 1672 to King Charles II.

Ice cream sales

Before cones, ice cream was sold in wax paper or in a "penny lick", a small glass bowl that belonged to the ice cream seller. The penny licks were eventually banned because they could spread tuberculosis.
